William Orr Elementary School is excited to have our new Sensory Room open! Orr
proudly hosts an award-winning Autism Focus program and with so many of our
students benefitting from consistent access to various sensory input, a state-of-the-art
sensory room is an extraordinary addition to our school! With a wide range of
equipment available, we are excited to be able to meet all the varying needs of our
students in ways we couldn’t prior to our new space. For example, our climbing wall
allows students to traverse across the wall offering proprioceptive (i.e. body awareness)
input while also helping to improve students’ core strength, motor planning skills,
balance and bilateral coordination. For students seeking deep pressure, we have our
compression canoe and LED roller slide. For a calming effect, students can utilize our
bubble tube corner, our playhouse with weighted items, or change the vibe of the room
with our light up rainbow and clouds. Using lights and sounds to bring various auditory
and visual sensory activities, our color changing light panel, music touch wall, and
musical light up hopscotch are also available for our students. Recognizing the benefits
of movement and sensory input on all students, especially our students with disabilities,
we are thrilled to be able to provide this as an extension of our instructional program to
meet students’ unique needs as well as help students self-regulate and increase their
readiness to learn, continuing our goal to provide an inclusive and productive learning
environment for all.
